At Cypress Christian School, learning extends beyond the classroom through meaningful relationships that encourage students to grow academically, socially and spiritually. One example of this commitment is the Reading Buddies Program, where first-grade students partnered with high school students for a memorable day of reading, conversation and encouragement.
During the visit, first graders read alongside their high school reading buddies before discussing the stories together. These one-on-one conversations helped younger students strengthen their reading comprehension while building confidence in their reading abilities.
For the first-grade students, the opportunity to spend time with older role models made reading both engaging and fun. High school students encouraged their younger buddies, asked thoughtful questions about the books and celebrated their progress, creating an environment where every student felt supported.
The event was sponsored by the newly established National English Honor Society (NEHS), providing juniors and seniors with an opportunity to serve younger students while sharing their love of reading. Through the partnership, high school students modeled leadership, patience and encouragement, demonstrating the Christ-centered values that define the Cypress Christian School community.
The Reading Buddies Program reflects Cypress Christian School’s commitment to developing confident readers while fostering meaningful connections throughout the campus. By bringing together students of different ages, the program encourages leadership, service and a lifelong love of learning.
