Forty-four rising ninth-grade students from Cypress Christian School spent June 24–27 in San Antonio participating in Student Leadership University (SLU) 101, a transformative experience designed to prepare students to lead with Christ at the center of their lives as they begin high school.
Throughout the four-day conference, students were challenged to see leadership not as a title or position but as an opportunity to faithfully serve others, pursue excellence and reflect the character of Christ in every area of life.
Through dynamic speakers, worship, small-group discussions and interactive learning experiences, students explored biblical principles of leadership that will continue to shape them throughout their years at Cypress Christian School and beyond.
One of the central themes of the week focused on pursuing excellence as an act of worship. Students were encouraged to approach every opportunity with diligence and integrity, embracing the truth of Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”
The conference also emphasized the importance of understanding how God uniquely created each individual. During a team-building experience at SeaWorld San Antonio, students learned about different personality styles and discovered how diverse gifts and perspectives strengthen teams when they are united by a common purpose. They were reminded of the encouragement found in 1 Peter 4:10, using the gifts God has given them to faithfully serve others.
Another powerful lesson centered on the Hope Circle, where students learned to replace fear, comparison and insecurity with the truth of God’s Word. By grounding their identity in Christ rather than circumstances or opinions, they were encouraged to fix their thoughts on what is true, honorable and praiseworthy, following the instruction of Philippians 4:8.
Students were further challenged to embrace discipline by choosing to “do the hard things first,” recognizing that perseverance and faithful obedience prepare them for future opportunities. Through the encouragement of James 1:2-4, they learned that God often uses challenges to strengthen faith, build character and develop maturity.
More than anything, SLU 101 inspired students to think beyond themselves and consider how God can use their lives to influence others for His glory. They returned home with a deeper understanding that true leadership begins with humility, servant-heartedness and a daily commitment to follow Christ.
The Cypress Christian School faculty is incredibly proud of the way these students represented the school throughout the week. Their enthusiasm, maturity and willingness to grow demonstrated the strong foundation they are building as they prepare to begin high school.
This experience also marks the beginning of a multi-year leadership journey. Next summer, these students will continue their development by participating in Student Leadership University 201 in Washington, D.C., where they will further explore leadership, history and the responsibility of influencing culture through a biblical worldview.
