The Cypress Christian School Archery Team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons to date, competing in both Texas 4-H and Texas Field Archery Association (TFAA) tournaments while continuing to grow the program through mentorship, sportsmanship and competitive excellence.
Throughout the season, the Warriors welcomed students with a wide range of experience. Some athletes discovered archery for the first time, while others competed at an advanced level across Texas. Experienced team members also invested in younger archers by mentoring elementary student Travis Pereira, helping him successfully begin his own competitive archery journey.
Success at the State Level
Competitive archers Ava Gonzalez, Kyler Khuong, Jeykei Ortiguero and Brandon Trieu represented Cypress Christian School throughout the year, earning numerous top-three finishes in both 4-H and TFAA competition.
The team’s season was highlighted at the Texas Field Archery Association State Championships, where:
Ava Gonzalez won the Freestyle Limited Recurve State Championship.
Kyler Khuong placed fifth in the Freestyle Limited Recurve division.
Brandon Trieu placed fifth in the Barebow Recurve division.
The team also competed in the Texas 4-H Indoor State Games before qualifying for additional summer competition.
Ava Gonzalez Excels on the National Stage
The season concluded with an extraordinary accomplishment as Class of 2026 graduate Ava Gonzalez represented both Texas and Cypress Christian School at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Competing alongside the Texas Recurve Archery Team, Ava faced many of the nation’s top youth archers representing 18 states.
Her results included:
Field Competition: Team Texas – 1st Place, Ava – 1st Individually
FITA Competition: Team Texas – 3rd Place, Ava – 1st Individually
3-D Competition: Team Texas – 2nd Place, Ava – 11th Individually
Overall: Team Texas – 2nd Place, Ava – 3rd Overall
While her accomplishments on the range were impressive, Ava also represented Cypress Christian School with humility and Christlike character throughout the competition. Coaches, parents and fellow competitors consistently praised her kindness, encouragement and sportsmanship, reflecting the values that define Warrior athletics.
Building More Than Archers
The CCS Archery program continues to emphasize far more than competitive success. Through mentorship, discipline, perseverance and Christ-centered leadership, students develop confidence and lifelong skills while learning to honor God through both victory and adversity.
“This season was a wonderful reflection of our program’s growth,” said Mrs. Debra Gonzalez, archery coach. “Whether students were competing for the first time or representing Texas on the national stage, every archer demonstrated dedication, sportsmanship and a desire to honor Christ. I’m incredibly proud of what this team accomplished and excited about the future of our program.”
