K-12 Private Christian School in Northwest Houston, TX

Veterans Day 2017

The annual chapel to honor those who have served our country in the military is always a special day at Cypress Christian School. On Friday, November 10, CCS students and faculty assembled in the new East Gym to welcome family members, guests and veterans to our annual Veterans Day Chapel.

The chapel was opened with a rousing rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, performed by the high school choir followed by the formal Posting of the Colors by CCS boy scouts Daniel Macune, Paul Carpenter, Tyler Landua, Marc Coates and Will Young. Mrs. Jessica Mynes, middle school performing arts teacher, led a presentation by CCS middle school students entitled, “The Remembrance Table,” which is a special ceremony to honor veterans who are still missing in action.

CCS Executive Director, Mr. Stephen Novotny, a veteran, who served with the United States Army welcomed guests to this special event and spoke of the importance of remembering those who have served and are currently serving our country. Following Mr. Novotny’s remarks, the audience enjoyed a performance by members of Mrs. Tania Overton’s elementary music classes featuring a medley of patriotic tunes with hand chimes.

The special speaker of the day was Lt. Col. Mark Martin, USA, retired. LTC Martin retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of distinguished active duty service, including commands in a wide variety of units around the world. Cypress Christian is especially appreciative of Mr. Martin, not only for his service to our country, but also for his service to CCS as a key member of the capital campaign which funded the construction of our new Campus Life Center and Gym (East Gym).

In the final performance of the morning, the CCS High School Choir directed by Mr. John Nance, sang a medley of the military anthems followed by God Bless America. During this song, each veteran service member was asked to stand and be recognized by the audience as their military brand anthem was performed.

The morning concluded with the formal Retiring of the Colors and a prayer of Thanksgiving led by High School Principal Jeff Mudrow.

Thank you to everyone who made this event a special morning where we could all say thank you to our veterans of the armed forces and to those who continue to serve our country. God bless our military and God bless America!
