On November 6, 2017, CCS welcomed friends and family members to the 2017 American Festival. This event provided the opportunity for each fifth-grade student to perform an originally and independently written dramatic monologue based on the life of a Civil War character chosen by the student.
Students were taught in Ms. Murrill’s fifth-grade writing class to express the words of a solitary character with no dialogue from any other character. Students learned to express a point of view through the thoughts, feelings and events presented during a fleeting moment in the life of that character.
This was the students' first attempt at writing at this level, and they were challenged by Ms. Murrill to focus on improving their fluency, word choice, ideas, organization and voice.
