Sixteen Track and Field Athletes Bound for TAPPS State Meet

April 29, 2011

On April 28, the HS Girls and Boys Track and Field team took 23 people to compete in the TAPPS 3A South Region Meet held in Hallettsville.  It was a great day for the Meet, with the weather-and especially the wind-being just right.

The day began with Evan Doremus capturing the gold in Boys High Jump followed by Lexus VanPelt taking the bronze (by attempts) in the Girls High Jump.  Just 15 feet away, our Shot Putters were giving it their all as Blessing Ajibero captured the bronze, with the best put of her season, and Chelbi Orrick placed sixth.  Calvin Davis stepped into the ring for our boys and brought home a bronze medal.  Continuing with field events, Katie and Natalie Moore were competing in the Triple Jump.  Natalie earned sixth place, while Katie earned the silver medal.  Usman Mohammed earned a silver medal for the boys team in the Triple Jump.  Usman then went to the Long Jump pit and brought home 4th place honors in that event.  The girls were in the Discus event next. Chelbi Orrick took 5th, Blessing Ajibero took 7th, and Lexus VanPelt earned 8th place in the Region.

After a little rest and a good lunch, the Warriors took to the track.  CCS started off strong as the Lady Warriors 4x100 relay team (Orrick, K. Moore, N. Moore, and VanPelt) earned the Regional Champions title, while breaking the school record with a time of 52.06.

Shannen Longridge won 5th place in the 100 m. Hurdles just missing the 4th place qualifying spot by .05 seconds.  It was literally a photo finish!Travis Takacs and Matt Bancroft stepped out for the 110 hurdles.  Matt earned 8th place honors, while Travis won the silver medal, breaking his own school record with a time of 16.06.

The next event was the speed event of the day, the 100 m. Dash.  Chelbi Orrick turned heads as she sped past everyone to become Regional Champion.  Travis had to turn around after the hurdles and compete in the 100m.  He placed 6th, running his best time of the season.  Next up was the 4x200 relay and the team of Lady Warriors stepped out onto the track knowing they could win it; and they did.  Chelbi Orrick, Katie Moore, Natalie Moore, and Lexus VanPelt flew around the track marking their best time of the season and earning the gold medal.  The boys team of TJ Mohammed, Barnabas Odeyomi, Hunter Vick, and Usman Mohammed earned the bronze medal as they just missed the school record.  Be looking for that record to be broken at State!

Natalie Moore had a short recovery from the relay and returned to the track to compete in the 400 m. Dash.  She earned fifth place honors because of her determination to give her very best to win points for the team.  Shannen Longridge and Matt Bancroft stepped up to the starting line to run the 300 m. Hurdles and both crossed the finish line in 7th place.  Usman Mohammed went to the 200 m. Dash ready to prove his speed is the real deal and he did as he became the Regional Champion.

We had the girls and boys 4x400 relay team finish our day.  The Lady Warriors (Landry, Cook, Vance, Longridge), ran their fastest time of the season knocking 5 seconds off their district time and coming across in 8th place.  The Warrior boys team (Boyd, P. Odeyomi, B. Odeyomi, and Vick) gave everything they had, and also ran their best time of the season, earning them 6th place.

When the points were totaled, out of 16 teams competing in our division, the Warrior boys team earned fourth place and the Lady Warriors came home with the third place plaque.  Those athletes placing 1st-4th in each event will advance to the State Meet next week at Baylor University.  We have 7 girls and 9 boys who have earned the honor of being State Finalists.  This is the most athletes we have taken to State and the most events we have ever had the privilege of competing in.

The entire track team has worked hard and had a tremendous meet yesterday representing Jesus Christ and Cypress Christian well.  The coaches are proud of everyone who went to Regionals!  We are now looking forward to the last goal of the season we have set for ourselves:  going to State and winning!

Keep watching for results of State May 6-7!
