Pennies in Water

September 13, 2012

Biology students explored the unique properties of water using pennies. The lab included the observation of properties that water has due to hydrogen bonding such as cohesion and adhesion. The experiment also included the demonstration of the effects that water pollution has on water and how it can be detrimental to water life. "The students were very surprised to find that the adhesion and cohesion forces were so strong," said Science Teacher Lori Teague. "Some of the pennies were holding more than 100 drops of water before spilling over. Full cups of water were able to hold more than 20 pennies." Please see photo gallery.
