Historic Comeback-Warriors Win in OT

Jacob Spenn

October 30, 2011

The Warriors traveled to Evadale on Friday night and walked away with one of the most exciting victories in school history. When Evadale came to Cypress last year, they had not lost a regular season game in over three years but that streak ended as Jason Groll piled up the yards and the defense pitched a shutout in the second half. Friday was senior night at Evadale and the Rebels senior class had never lost a home game. That streak looked safe as the Rebels built a 21 to 7 half time lead.

The second half was a different story, but a similar one to last season, as the defense again pitched a shutout. The offense had to overcome several turnovers including a fumble with less than 4 minutes to play as the Warriors were driving into Rebel territory. Throughout the game various players, the offense, the defense, and special team all had plays they would like to do over. In the end, it was a tremendous team effort that showed the great resolve of this Warrior football team.

Evadale and their tremendous rushing attach took over position on their own 30 yard line with under 4 minutes to go in the game. The Warriors needed a three and out from the defense and they got it. McCurry, Crozier, Kostak and Barnabas Odeyomi combined with a host of other Warriors to force a punt on 4th and 12.

The senior combination of Ben Mitchell and Andrew Galloway that was so impressive a week before connected again. Andrew Galloway caught three of his five catches on this final drive of the game. Mitchell hit Galloway for 10 yards on a great sideline catch that got the ball down to the 42. After an incomplete pass, Jason Groll carried the ball through tackles to the 30. Mitchell again hit Galloway on the sideline which set up a 2nd down and 6 on the 24 yard line with just 45 seconds remaining in the game. The Warriors went with the double move and Mitchell connected with Galloway one last time for a 24 yard TD catch on the hitch and go. Austin Barton tied the game with the extra point and the Warriors were headed for their first ever overtime game.

Cypress got the ball first in overtime and Jason Groll simply ran over the Rebels. His first carry went for 18 yards and his second put the Warriors on top for good. The Rebels were able to get a first down around the 12 yard line, but on 2nd down Barnabas Odeyomi picked off a Rebel pass as the goal line to end the game.
