Evan Doremus STATE CHAMPION IN HIGH JUMP-Track Team brings home the medals!
May 8, 2011
The CCS Warriors took 7 girls and 11 boys to the TAPPS State Track and Field Meet held at Baylor University on May 6-7. It was a great trip with tremendous results. The team came home with more medals than in any season past. One of the shining moments was Evan Doremus clearing 6'6" in the high jump to bring home the GOLD in the 3A Boys High Jump. Evan had a school record-breaking jump of 6' 7" earlier in the season, but it had been a while since he had gotten above 6' 2". He spent this past week tweaking a few form issues and had an amazing day of jumping at State. Of course, Evan already has his eyes on the State Record of 6' 9" for next year.
Lexus VanPelt took the Silver Medal in the Girls High Jump, clearing 5' 0" with ease. She was standing in first place, until the last jumper on her last attempt cleared 5' 2". Lexus didn't't feel bad about it, though, because she tied her personal best of the season. Freshmen Katie Moore and Blessing Ajibero took sixth and eighth places respectively in the Triple Jump and Shot Put. Calvin Davis had his personal best and set the school record even further out in the shot put by putting 42' 6" and finishing in fourth place, higher than any CCS shot putter in school history. Usman Mohammed took the Bronze Medal in the Triple Jump, had a short rest and went back out to compete in the Long Jump. He jumped his personal best and earned fourth place.
Friday was a great, but long, Field Events day for us. Everyone went back to the hotel to refuel and rest in preparation for Saturday's running events. As the team met together in devotions that night the focus was on "Achievement and Personal Success" and doing your absolute best for God's Glory.
On Saturday morning, the girls 4x100 relay started the running off by capturing the bronze medal. Travis Takacs stepped onto the track in the 110m hurdles and grabbed the Bronze Medal with an exciting race. Chelbi Orrick took the track in the 100m dash against stiff competition and the freshman earned 7th place honors. The time arrived for the 4x200m relay, where both the girls and boys teams were competing. The girls relay team knew they had one team on the track who had recorded a faster time than theirs during the season, but they were determined to not be denied a place on the medal stand and they ran their race accordingly. The girls team of Chelbi Orrick, Katie Moore, Natalie Moore, and Lexus VanPelt ran their fastest time of the season and came home with the Silver Medal. The two seniors, Natalie and Lexus, poured it on in their positions, and came up just 7 meters behind a fast Colleyville Covenant team. The boys took the track knowing there were several teams who had run better times but they, too, were determined to finish high. The team of TJ Mohammed, Barnabas Odeyomi, Hunter Vick, and Usman Mohammed ran their fastest time of the season, broke the school record, and earned 5th place honors. Usman Mohammed brought the fantastic Warrior Track & Field season to a close, running the 200m and earning 5th place. At first glance, this may not seem impressive...but take into consideration places 2-6 all finished with less than 1/10 of a second difference in time!
The team had a great time and performed so well. The talk, while waiting for parents back at CCS Saturday, was all about how the underclassmen are going to go back next year and win! (Exactly what a coach wants to hear.) Along the way, the school also received compliments from other schools and adult spectators regarding what good students we have in attitude and behavior! This was definitely a GREAT trip and we are proud of each of our competitors!
