CCS Elementary Teacher Earns Master of Education Degree
October 28, 2011
Mrs. Schumaker received a Master of Education from Southern Methodist University. Her academic coursework prepared her as a specialist in reading with a particular emphasis on tutoring the dyslexic reader. Mrs. Schumaker was a member of the first group of Houston based teachers that were trained through SMU in partnership with the Neuhaus Education Center located in Houston. This program was designed to train reading specialists with an additional certification to teach the dyslexic reader. Mrs. Schumaker was recently certified by the state of Texas as a reading specialist. She continues to work towards certification as a dyslexic therapist. While her coursework is completed, she must continue to accumulate over 200 hours of student tutoring time. She began her degree program in August 2009 and completed it this past summer. When asked how her newly acquired degree has enriched her teaching, Mrs. Schumaker noted, “I have a deeper knowledge of the components of effective reading instruction, particularly those identified by recent research. I am able to plan reading instruction more effectively around the needs of the student.”
