Building Edible Cells in Seventh Grade

September 27, 2011

Mrs. Jean Hinn’s seventh grade life science classes built Edible Cells! Utilizing a large sugar cookie as the base, pairs of students showed their creativity and knowledge of the parts of a cell by adding items such as frosting, jello, gummie worms, bubble gum, Hershey Kisses, and other confections to make either a plant or animal cell from the cookie.

Mrs. Hinn evaluated each cell on the inclusion of the required cell ‘s organelles (the tiny cell parts), the relative placement of the cell parts, their understanding of each organelle’s function in the cell, and the creativity shown by the students. Of course, the best part was getting to sample the candy as they worked and then enjoying the finished product!

Thanks to the seventh grade parents for providing the sugar cookies and items for this hands-on activity. What a fun way to learn!
