History

In 2009 the Warrior football program reached new highs winning its first ever District Championship and its first ever playoff game. The Warriors also set a school record with 10 wins in a season. These accomplishments were achieved in front of a new 1,000 seat grandstand complete with stadium chairs. The program had the largest number of players in school history with over 40 high school and 30 middle school players. The Warriors will return 18 starters for the 2010 season.

The 2008 season of Cypress Christian Football was in its 10th season of football. It started as a flag football program in the early 90’s under Coach Howard Young and transitioned to a 6 man football program in 1999 under Coach Frank Harmeier and Coach Delnor Neufeld. The following year in the fall of 2000 Cypress Christian played its first season of 11 man football under the direction of Coach Summers. Jerry Hornsby took over the program in 2003 and took Cypress Christian to the TAPPS State Playoffs in 2003 and 2004. The 2004 team was the District Runner Up. Coach Spenn became the 5th head coach of Cypress Christian in 2008 and the Warriors finished as District Runner Up and returned to the playoffs for the third time. The program continues to grow and the excitement is building about what God has in store for Cypress Christian Football.

Traditions

Just Being Different

There are enough regular football programs out there. We are striving to be different and to build an intentional community. We do a lot of crazy things (ice cream sundays and water balloons to name two) throughout the season to make football fun, interesting and exciting while we build men, grow in Christ and play great football.

Encouragement

Our job as coaches is to love the players and their job is to love each other. We spend time at the end of each practice giving players and coaches the opportunity to encourage each other. We want to be a team that wins the sideline battle by being loud, excited and positive no mater the circumstances.

Combative Day

During each week of early camp we will take one hour at the end of practice to break up the team into teams of 5 or 6 and play a variety of competitive drills and award the winning teams and individuals.

Big Circle

We end every tackling drill with a big circle where we show case the best hitters of the day.

Challenge Drills

Each practice ends with a challenge drill between the 1st offense and 1st defense. We keep score throughout the week and it helps us to be ready for the opening kickoff on Friday night.

Conditioning is a Privilege

We believe that conditioning is a privilege and players must earn it. Players help to determine the amount of conditioning we do and we run more after a good practice than we do a bad one because we earned the right to make ourselves better by conditioning.

Blue Jersey Warriors and Blue Shirt Warriors

Each week we give out a special practice jersey to an offensive and defensive player that has demonstrated a great ability to Close the Gap between their potential and their performance during the week. Every player has the opportunity to become a Blue Shirt Warrior by earning a “Close the Gap” t-shirt throughout the offseason and regular season.

Wednesday Testimonies

On Wednesdays we end practice early and give dads, coaches, pastors or others in the community the opportunity to share their testimony and athletic experience with the team. This is a great opportunity to pass on a wealth of wisdom from one generation to the next.

Pregame meal

Prior to every varsity football game we have a great pregame meal as a team prepared by our team moms and parents.

The Huddle

After every football game the coaches, team, parents and fans all gather in the South end zone to give out game balls and encourage one another. This is a special time of building players up. For many people this is their favorite part of the season.

Family Fun Day

Just prior to the start of spring football we put on a Football Family Fun Day for the elementary students. Seniors autograph mini footballs and the rest of the team teaches elementary students basic football fundamentals while they try to learn everyone’s name.

Last Hit Drill

After the last game of the season we practice the following Monday and put on the pads one last time for the “Last Hit.” This is an opportunity for seniors to symbolically pass the torch to the juniors so that they can carry on the tradition of Cypress Christian Football.
