Biology Students Act as Cytogeneticists

Biology students act as cytogeneticists by preparing a human karyotype from a metaphase spread of magnetic chromosomes. They identify homologous pairs based on size, centromere position, G-banding patterns and chromosome arm length. Once the karyotypes have been prepared, students determine the genetic makeup, gender, and chromosomal disorder (if any) that the karyotype represents.
